JP splitting? Pro-govt faction behind the scene

A group of Jatiya Party (JP) leaders are thinking of forming a separate faction overlooking JP Chairman Hussein Muhammad Ershad and the party’s senior presidium member Rawshan Ershad. Two ministers from the party in the government and some other leaders are forming the faction bypassing Rawshan Ershad from the point of view that she will not support them in forming the new faction.

Some leaders of the JP which is the opposition party in the parliament held several meetings with the leaders, who quitted the Ershad-led JP, to discuss the work plan and formation of the party.

Ershad declared his younger brother GM Kader co-chairman of the party on January 17. Later on January 19 then-JP secretary general Ziauddin Ahmed Bablu declared Rawshan Ershad its acting chairman. He is close to JP presidium member and Water Resources Minister Anisul Islam Mahmud.

Then on January 21 Rawshan Ershad distanced herself from that post. Irked by this, five to six presidium members of JP loyal to Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud have started the process of forming the separate JP.

JP sources say JP presidium member Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud, former secretary general Ziauddin Ahmed Bablu, opposition chief whip Tajul Islam, state minister for labour Mujibul Huq Chunnu are playing the pioneering role in the process. They are known to be close to the government from the JP fold. However, though not openly, JP presidium member Kazi Firoz Rashid is also involved in the process.

Talking to some pro-Ershad leaders in the JP it has been learnt that Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud and Tajul Islam Chowdhury known as very close to the government have failed to have Rawshan Ershad in their fold. Now they have adopted the new strategy. As part of that, Anisul, Bablu and Tajul held several meetings with Anwar Hossain Manju who is leading another JP faction sans Ershad.

JP sources say Anwar Hossain Manju advised Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud to think more before doing it. Sharing his experience Manju said, “Still JP means Ershad. I myself, Naziur Rahman Manju and Kazi Jafar also tried, but failed. So, think before doing it.”

However, Forest Minister and JP (Manju) chairman Anwar Hossain Manju denied holding any such meeting. He said, “There had been no such meeting. But, as some ministers are there in the cabinet from the JP, we can talk to each other.”

It can be mentioned here that the son of Barrister Moinul Hossain, who is brother of Anwar Hossain Manju, a close confidante of the government and its forest minister, is the son-in-law of Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud.

JP presidium member and Dhaka north city JP president SM Faysal Chisti told The Report, “We heard of the meeting. But Anwar Hossain Manju discouraged them about forming the party.”

Admitting that some leaders were active to create a rift in the party, JP secretary general and spokesman ABM Ruhul Amin Hawlader told The Report, “I came to know about a meeting. But Ershad is the father figure in the JP. JP means Ershad. Ershad means JP. If anybody thinks otherwise, they will be left in the dustbin of history. The history attests to it.”

Opposition chief whip in parliament and JP presidium member Tajul Islam Chowdhury told The Report, “We had never supported break-up of any party nor we support it today. We want the party to run as per rules. We are working to bring it under the rules.”

Another JP presidium member Kazi Firoz Rashid MP told The Report, “It has been 60 years since the marriage of Ershad and Rawshan. Still their marriage has not broken up. They are united. Now if anybody plays with them, they will be left in trouble. I’m not involved in any such game. I’m not in favour of any group or faction. I go my own way.”

JP co-chairman GM Kader told The Report, “Everybody is an individual. Everybody will have his own opinion. This is natural. But if you belong to a party, you must accept the opinions of most of the people. If they cannot do that, either they will leave the party or they will be expelled. I will not say anything about this.”
