516 tremors jolted Bangladesh in 14 years Desk:

Bangladesh felt 516 earthquakes from 2001 to 2014, Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury said on Tuesday.

Replying to a question from Awami League lawmaker Didarul Alam (Chittagong-4), the minister said the country experienced highest 43 tremors in 2002 followed by 42 in 2003, reports BSS.

He said 31 earthquakes jolted the country in 2001, while the number in 2004 was 39; 30 in 2005; 27 in 2006; 31 in 2007; 36 in 2008; 34 in 2009; 38 in 2010; 37 in 2011; 34 in 2012; 35 in 2013 and 25 in 2014.

The minister said the government is conducting various campaigns to create mass awareness about during and post-earthquake steps.

The measures, he said, include broadcasting advertisements on television channels, distribution of leaflets and setting up billboards.

Maya said the government has undertaken a plan to create 62,000 urban search and rescue volunteers for successful participation in the post-tremor rescue operation. "Training has already been given to 30,000 volunteers," he added.

Responding to a supplementary from ruling party lawmaker Shameem Osman, the minister said purchasing equipment of Taka 158 crore is under process for conducting rescue operation after earthquakes.
