The deep depression formed over the Bay of Bengal has intensified and turned into cyclonic storm ‘Roanu’ and is likely to move in a north-northeasterly direction and may cross Chittagong-Noakhali coast by Saturday evening, met office said.

Maritime ports of Chittagong has been advised lower local warning signal no. four (r) but instead hoist danger signal number seven (r) seven.

Coastal districts of Chittagong, Noakhali, Laxmipur, Feni, Chandpur, and their offshore islands and chars will come under danger signal number seven (r) seven.

Coastal districts of Bhola, Borguna, Patuakhali, Barisal, Pirozpur, Jhalokathi, Bagherhat, Khulna, Satkhira and their offshore islands and chars will come under danger signal number five (r) five.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department, in a special bulletin on Friday, said the cyclonic storm ‘Roanu’ (ecp 992 hpa) over westcentral bay and adjoining area moved rapidly north-northeastward and now lies over north bay and adjoining westcentral bay (near lat 18.00 n & long 84.20e) and was centred at 12:00 noon today (the 20th may 2016) about 965 kms southwest of chittagong port, 945 kms southwest of cox’s bazar port, 775 kms southwest of mongla port and 810 kms southwest of payra port.

Maximum sustained wind speed within 54 kms of the cyclone centre is about 62 kph rising to 88 kph in gusts/squalls. Sea will remain very rough near the cyclone centre.

Under the influence of the cyclonic storm ‘roanu’ the low-lying areas of the coastal districts of cox’s bazar, chittagong, noakhali, laxmipur, feni, chandpur, borguna, bhola, patuakhali, barisal, pirozpur, jhalokathi, bagherhat, khulna, satkhira and their offshore islands and chars are likely to be inundated by storm surge of 4-5 feet height above normal astronomical tide.

The coastal districts of Cox’s Bazar, Chittagong, Noakhali, Laxmipur, Feni, Chandpur, Borguna, Patuakhali, Barisal, Bhola, Pirozpur, Jhalokathi, Bagerhat, Khulna, Satkhira and their offshore islands and chars are likely to experience wind speed up to 62-88 kph in gusts/ squalls with heavy to very falls during the passage of the storm.

All fishing boats and trawlers over north bay and deep sea have been advised to take shelter immediately and will remain in shelter till further notice.
