World Environment Day observed

The World Environment Day-2016 was observed in the country as elsewhere in the world on Sunday with massive awareness campaign to protect environment and conserve wildlife.

Ascertained by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Day is observed every year on 5th June to raise global awareness of the need to take positive environmental action.

Department of Environment (DoE) and the daily Samakal jointly organized a roundtable titled "Environment for sustainable development" on the occasion of the World Environment Day-2016 in the CIRDAP auditorium in the capital city, reports BSS.

Deputy Minister for Environment and Forest Abdullah Al Islam Jakob, Chief Conservator of Forest Yunus Ali, Director General of Department of Environment Raisul Alam Mondol, environment activists and officials, among others, addressed the discussion with Environment Secretary Dr Kamal Uddin Ahmed in the chair.

Manju said the country must go for effective enforcement of law to protect environment from pollution and harmful human intervention.

"Relevant organizations should implement their rules and regulations effectively to stop widespread environmental pollution to get better yield to safeguard our environment and biodiversity," he added.

The World Environment Day-2016 was observed in the country as elsewhere in the world today (Sunday) with the theme of the day "Go Wild for Life".

Institute of Disaster Management and Vulnerability Studies of Dhaka

University brought out a procession to celebrate the World Environment Day on the campus of Dhaka University (DU).

DU Vice Chancellor AAMS Prof Dr Arefin Siddique led the procession, which was participated by teachers and students of the university, a press release said.

Institute of Disaster Management and Vulnerability Studies of Dhaka University also launched a tree-plantation campaign.

As part of the World Environment Day's programme, a seminar was also held in the auditorium of Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban of Dhaka University today.

Dhaka University, Oxfam, Jagoroni Chkara Foundation and Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers' Association jointly organized the seminar on "Go Wild for Life". DU Vice Chancellor AAMS Prof Arefin Siddique addressed the seminar as the chief guest with Dean of Earth and Environmental Science Faculty of the university Prof ASM Maksud Kamal in the chair.
