Public-private initiative to alleviate urban poverty stressed

Thereport24.com Desk:

Speakers at an international conference here today said rate of poverty alleviation in urban areas is slow because of unplanned urbanization and underscored the need for taking steps at public-private level to face the situation, reports BSS.

They said one type of poverty friendly urbanization is taking place which is a barrier to achieving the target of becoming a middle income country.

Power and Participation Research Centre (PPRC) and Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) jointly organized the two-day international conference 'Urban Poverty: Challenges of Perspectives and Action.

Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal was scheduled to attend the opening session as the chief guest but he could not join it. He gave the speech through a video message. PPRC Chairman Hossain Zillur Rahman presided over it.

State minister for finance and planning MA Mannan, economist Dr Wahiduddin Mahmud, BBS director general Abdul Wazed, PPRC senior fellow Liaquat Ali Chowdhury, among others, spoke at the session.

Ming Zhang of the World Bank, David Hulme of University of Manchester and Hossain Zillur Rahman presented three keynote papers separately.

Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said the government has been implementing a number of programmes including expanding the education and healthcare services to rural areas and creation of jobs for alleviation of poverty from urban areas. Implementation of these programmes would discourage the rural people to come to urban areas, he added.

Dr Wahiduddin Mahmud in his speech said there is lack of taking steps for alleviation of urban poverty. He said initiatives should be taken at public and private level to alleviate urban poverty.

It is not possible to force the poor people in urban area to go to rural area, he said and suggested expansion of non-agricultural activities in rural areas to encourage urban-based poor people to go to rural areas.
