11 JMB operatives killed at Gazipur, Tangail

At least 11 suspected members of banned militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), including Dhaka divisional operation commander, were killed in three operations of police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Gazipur and Tangail districts on Saturday.

Police confirmed deaths of seven at Aparkhola of Gazipur district while RAB confirmed deaths of four others at Harinail in Gazipur and at Kagmara in Tangail district.

Dhaka divisional operation commander Faridul Islam alias Akash alias Provat was killed in Aparkhola gunfight while identities of the others could not be known immediately, rep[orts BSS.

In Gazipur, a joint squad of Counter Terrorism Unit, SWAT of police and RAB raided a two-storied building at Aparkhola of Gazipur around 12 this noon, police super Harun-ur-Rashid said.

Police requested the militants to surrender, but they refused and fired shots forcing them to fire back which triggered a fierce gunfight that left seven JMB members killed, he said. He confirmed the death of Dhaka divisional operation commander Akash in the shootout, but said the identity of the six others could not be known immediately.

A pistol and some ammunition were recovered from the spot, he said.

In another action in Gazipur, RAB personnel cordoned off the house of one Ataur Rahman at Harinal early this morning and came under fire from JMB operatives. A fierce gunfight erupted as the RAB returned the fire resulting in deaths of two JMB members, RAB media wing director commander Mufti Mahmud Khan said.

An AK-47 rifle, dozens of bullet, explosives substances, four laptops, three sharp weapons, and a laminating machine were seized from the spot, he said.

In Tangail, a gunfight took place between RAB-12 and JMB operatives when the battalion raided a den of the militants in Kagmara area of Tangail town killing two militants and injuring two RAB personnel, said 3 no company commander of the battalion Mohiuddin Faruque.

The duo rented the house of Azhar Master seven days back identifying them as students, he said.

Filing of separate cases is underway.
